As the 2024/2025 Ghana Premier League kicks off this weekend, fans are eagerly anticipating a season filled with excitement and competition.
Premier League expert Shaban Mohammed (Mo Shaban) offers an in-depth look at what to expect from the various clubs as they prepare for another thrilling campaign.
The season opens on Saturday with Dreams FC taking on defending champions FC Samartex 1996 at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Meanwhile, newly promoted Vision FC will face Berekum Chelsea at the Nii Adjei Kraku II Sports Complex.
Sunday promises even more action, with Hearts of Oak set to meet newly promoted Basake Holy Stars, Karela United clashing with Asante Kotoko, and Nsoatreman FC hosting Young Apostles.
Other fixtures include Medeama SC versus Accra Lions, Aduana FC against Heart of Lions, Gold Stars versus Legon Cities, and Nations FC facing Bechem United.
New Managers, New Players
Several clubs have made significant changes ahead of the new season. The three newly promoted sides—Vision FC, Basake Holy Stars, and Young Apostles—have all appointed new coaches: Nana Agyemang, Abdulai Gazale, and Joseph Asare Badiako, respectively.
Other notable managerial changes include Kwaku Danso’s return to Bechem United, Yaw Preko’s move to Nsoatreman FC, and James Jimmy Corbllah taking charge at Karela United.
Player transfers have also been plentiful, with many clubs bolstering their squads.
Young Apostles signed forward Daniel Lomotey and Clinton Opoku on free transfers, while FC Samartex 1996 added three former Real Tamale United players to their roster.
Hearts of Oak made key signings, including Asamoah Boateng Afriyie and Mawuli Wayo, while Asante Kotoko brought in Emmanuel Antwi, Albert Amoah, and Nigerian winger Wisdom Bassey.
The title race promises to be fierce, with no club having successfully defended their title in the past four seasons.
FC Samartex 1996, the reigning champions, will aim to break this trend.
Asante Kotoko have strengthened their squad with several foreign players and can be considered strong contenders.
Hearts of Oak, after narrowly avoiding relegation last season, have also made crucial signings to bolster their squad.
Medeama SC, who won the league in the 2022/23 season, are another team to watch, especially with the addition of Andy Kumi Francis to their ranks.
As the season unfolds, all eyes will be on the 18 Premier League teams as they vie for glory in what promises to be a captivating campaign.
