Rwanda severs ties with Belgium over ‘neo-colonial delusions’

Rwanda has cut diplomatic ties with Belgium, saying it has been “consistently undermined” by the European nation during the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Brussels has been leading calls for European nations to sanction Rwanda over its support for the M23, a rebel group at the centre of DR Congo’s crisis.

The authorities in Kigali, Rwanda’s capital, have given Belgian diplomats 48 hours to leave the country.

Belgium, which is the former colonial power, has said it will respond to these measures and labelled Rwanda’s decision “disproportionate”.

Despite assertions from the UN and US, Rwanda has denied backing the M23.

In its statement on Monday, Kigali accused Brussels of attempting to “sustain its neo-colonial delusions”.

“Belgium has clearly taken sides in a regional conflict and continues to systematically mobilise against Rwanda in different forums, using lies and manipulation to secure an unjustified hostile opinion of Rwanda, in an attempt to destabilise both Rwanda and the region,” the statement said.

Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot responded to Rwanda’s measures on social media, saying: “This is disproportionate and shows that when we disagree with Rwanda they prefer not to engage in dialogue.”

Prevot said Rwandan diplomats in Belgium will be declared “persona non grata”.

This declaration can lead to the removal of diplomatic status and often results in the expulsion or the withdrawal of recognition of envoys.

Around 7,000 people have been killed in the fighting between the M23 and DR Congo’s armed forces in the east of the country since the beginning of the year, the Congolese authorities have said.

According to the UN children’s agency, Unicef, more than 850,000 people have been forced to flee their homes since the conflict increased in intensity in January.

In the past two months, the M23 have taken control of two key cities – Goma and Bukavu.

In an attempt to pressure Rwanda into withdrawing its support for the M23 Britain has cut some of its aid to the country.

Last month, the UN Security Council demanded that the M23 end hostilities and that Rwanda should pull its troops out of DR Congo.

Before Kigali cut ties with Brussels, Rwandan President Paul Kagame vowed that his country would “stand up” to Belgium.

“We would ask [Belgium]: ‘Who are you by the way? Who put you in charge of us?’ Rwandans believe in God, but did God really put these people in charge of Rwanda?” Kagame asked in an address on Sunday.

Customs intercepts GH₵20m worth of Opioids at Tema Port

The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), in collaboration with other stakeholders, has intercepted a container of opioid drugs worth approximately GH₵20 million at the Tema Port.

The seized shipment included:

  • Rahol Tapentadol 250 mg – 26 cartons
  • Tafradol Tapentadol 120 mg – 160 cartons
  • Timaking Tapentadol 120 mg – 40 cartons
  • Loperamide 2 mg – 190 cartons
  • Chlorpheniramine Maleate – 320 cartons

Authorities revealed that the consignment was intended for Niger as its final destination.

Government Vows to Prevent Opioid Trafficking

Speaking at a press briefing at Tema Port, Minister of Health Kwabena Mintah Akandoh assured that the government is committed to preventing Ghana from being used as a transit point for opioid trafficking.

“Inasmuch as we are interested in facilitating trade in this country, we will not allow Ghana to be a safe haven for opiods. And let me tell you that the president is personally interested in this matter. On my way here, he called me twice, and it tells you how important and critical this particular issue is.”

Authorities have pledged to tighten regulations and enhance monitoring to curb illicit drug shipments through Ghana’s ports.

KNUST student who allegedly murdered girlfriend remanded again

A final-year student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Daniel Tuffour, has been remanded by the court for the second time over his alleged involvement in the death of his girlfriend, Joana Deladem Yabani.

Yabani’s lifeless body was discovered on the KNUST campus on February 27, 2025. CCTV footage reportedly captured a man, believed to be Tuffour, strangling her to death following an altercation.

Tuffour was arrested hours after the incident and first appeared in court, where he was remanded.

At his second court appearance, the prosecutor informed the court that the case docket had been forwarded to the Attorney General’s office for advice.

The prosecution, therefore, requested that the suspect remain in custody, a request the court granted.

The case has been adjourned to April 1, 2025, by which time the Attorney General’s advice is expected to be ready.

W/R: Lands minister launches training for 460 Blue Water Guards to fight galamsey

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has launched the government’s flagship Blue Water Initiative, aimed at restoring polluted water resources.

As part of the initiative, he announced the commencement of a four-day training program for the first batch of 460 Blue Water Guards, who will provide 24-hour monitoring and protection of the nation’s water bodies. The minister emphasised that the Blue Water Guards will serve as vigilant stewards, safeguarding water resources from the devastating effects of illegal mining. He also revealed plans to train and deploy 2,000 guards nationwide in the coming months.

“The call for urgent action has never been more pressing. People often do not want us to say it, but this is a crisis of our lifetime. At the heart of why we are here is the Blue Water Initiative, and at the heart of this initiative is the heart of the Blue Water Guard. This aims to train 2,000 individuals across the country to protect our valuable water bodies.”

“They will serve as the frontline defenders of our water bodies and ensure that our water bodies remain a source of life, and livelihood for generations to come.  The responsibility of the Blue Water Guards is paramount in the fight against illegal mining,” he stated. The Deputy CEO of the Minerals Commission, Emmanuel Anyimah noted that “We will provide the necessary regulatory support, technical guidance, and oversight to ensure that the River Guards are well-equipped to execute their mandate effectively.

“This initiative aligns with our core values—professionalism, integrity, teamwork, and service excellence—values that will undoubtedly guide our collective efforts in the days ahead.”

River guards a waste of resources – A Rocha Ghana

A Rocha Ghana has called for the abolishment of river guard operations as a strategy to combat illegal mining around water bodies and forest reserves, arguing that it has proven ineffective and is a waste of resources.

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi-Buah, announced the launch of the ‘Blue Water Initiative’ and the training of the first batch of ‘River Guards’ to curb the environmental impact of illegal mining in the Western Region.

The initiative is part of President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to restoring Ghana’s environment while rehabilitating polluted water bodies.

Speaking to Citi News on Monday, March 17, Deputy National Director of A Rocha Ghana, Daryl Bosu, questioned the effectiveness of the initiative, given that its implementation over the years has yielded no results.

“We don’t see the strategy as going to be effective; we wish that it was scrapped entirely. What exactly are they going to do? Are they going to do anything different from what past administrations have done?

“We need resources to rehabilitate degraded land and to clean the rivers. We don’t need to be spending those resources on things like river guards,” he emphasized.

He further urged the government to redirect resources into empowering residents in mining communities to report miners encroaching on these sites.

“When communities realize illegal mining activities, nobody responds to them. The community members are the frontline vanguards because they see the activities on their way to their farms, markets, and so on. They should be given priority when they report these acts to the compliance agencies, “He stated.

A/R: I’ve been inundated with calls from residents over Dumsor – Amoakohene

Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene has revealed that he is under intense pressure from residents in the region following the recent instability in power supply, with the worst incident occurring over the weekend.

For weeks, residents of the Ashanti Region have raised persistent concerns over the unstable power supply, which continues to disrupt both commercial and domestic activities.

Dr. Amoakohene lamented that he has been inundated with calls from residents urging him to intervene and help resolve the power crisis.

“For some few months now, we have been having power outages. Others have blamed it on sabotage, and others have blamed it on a lot of reasons.

“Sunday, March 16, was epic, it  [dumsor] was almost all over the districts and municipalities, so, I have had a lot of complaints from most of the communities. We believe that you are in to solve problems in the energy sector,” he stated.

The growing complaints over the unstable power situation have compelled the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, to visit the region and engage key stakeholders in the power sector to find solutions to the challenge.

As part of efforts to address the shortfalls, the Minister is expected to inspect ongoing power infrastructure projects in the Ashanti Region. Mr. Jinapor attributed the situation to what he described as a weak power sector inherited by the current administration.

He, however, outlined several measures aimed at addressing the challenge and improving power supply in the region.

“Ashanti region peculiarly has a major problem with power supply, it’s not just the supply of the power into the grid, but also evacuating the power and distributing it. GRIDCo is injecting some major transformers to stabilise the power supply.

“ECG is also doing some major works, and we expect that the power supply situation in Kumasi and its environs and Ashanti Region in general should see significant improvements,” he stated.

Free SHS: Allow people who can afford to pay – Otumfuo urges govt

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has called for a review of Ghana’s Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, suggesting that families who can afford it should contribute, allowing government resources to support students in genuine need.

Speaking during a courtesy call by the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, Otumfuo proposed a mixed-support system, similar to past practices where bursaries were awarded to needy but deserving students, while those who could afford it paid their way.

“Those who can afford to pay, let’s have a second look at the policy. If someone can afford it, let’s allow them to pay.

“In the old times, when you passed, the bursary would look for good but needy students and award them scholarships, and those who could afford to pay did so.”

While acknowledging the benefits of Free SHS, Otumfuo stressed the need for a national dialogue to address the program’s challenges and ensure its sustainability.

“This Free SHS we are talking about, although we have implemented it, if we have a dialogue and find out that it will result in students coming home every now and then because there is no food, then it is not fit for purpose.”

He also raised concerns about infrastructure and logistical challenges affecting senior high schools, including overcrowded dormitories, lack of science and ICT laboratories, food shortages, and inadequate school buses.

“Our dormitories are overcrowded and lack science and ICT labs. Sometimes PTA makes contributions to support. The lack of school buses and the shortage of food should all be looked at. Let us implement it well so that students will stay in school and have enough to eat.”

The Free SHS policy, introduced in 2017, aimed to remove financial barriers to secondary education. While it has increased enrollment, concerns remain about funding sustainability and educational quality.

‘I turned down offer to leave Man Utd in summer’ – Fernandes

Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes says he could have left the club last summer.

The 30-year-old was United’s hero on Thursday night, scoring a hat-trick as they beat Real Sociedad to move into a Europa League quarter-final with Lyon.

He was also singled out for praise by co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe in an interview with BBC Sport on Monday.

But Fernandes said there had been an offer to sign him in the summer and he’d held talks with the club about his future.

“I sat with the club because I had an offer to leave,” he said. “We talked about the possibility of me leaving the club or staying.

“They said what they wanted from me. I just asked if they still see me as part of the future of the club or not. I spoke at the time with (Erik) Ten Hag also.

“He was very clear with me, the club was very clear with me, that they thought I would be a big part of this rebuild. I thought that we could be successful.”

The Portugal international now has 15 goals this season. None of his team-mates have got into double figures.

In a campaign that has been bad enough for United, who are 14th in the Premier League and on the brink of their worst domestic campaign since the 1973-74 relegation season, it is not hard to imagine the strife they would have been in had talks with Fernandes in the summer taken a different turn amid interest from Bayern Munich among others.

After Ten Hag was sacked in October, Fernandes’ fellow countryman Ruben Amorim came in as replacement – but a bleak situation has got no better.

Last month legendary former captain Roy Keane blasted Fernandes, saying “talent is not enough” and that he was not “a fighter”.

Even Amorim, in the wake of Fernandes’ Europa League exploits said his captain needs to “trust” his team-mates more.

“Roy Keane was an amazing captain for the club, one of the best as everyone says,” said Fernandes.

“I didn’t have the chance to see much from him, only the last few years, but he was a great player that won everything for the club. He’s massively respected from everyone and has all my respect.

“He has to give his opinion in a programme and this is what he thinks about me.

“I don’t want to copy anyone. I try to be the best captain that I can for my team-mates and help everyone in the best way I know.”

The Europa League remains a route back into the Champions League for United despite their poor season.

Fernandes, who is under contract until 2027, says he wants to stay at Old Trafford for as long as they are competing for trophies.

He said: “We can’t relax at this club. We need to prove ourselves every day in training and every day that we have a game.

“I’m in the same boat as my team-mates. It doesn’t matter how much you do, how much you score, how much you assist… It’s about the team.

“I’m very happy at the club. Obviously, I want to win trophies. I want to be in the biggest competitions, I want to fight for the big trophies. That’s what I said to the club. That’s what the club said to me that they want to do.”

Ratcliffe said this week some players he has inherited are “not good enough” and “overpaid”.

Midfielder Casemiro, striker Rasmus Hojlund, goalkeeper Andre Onana, and wingers Antony and Jadon Sancho – who are on loan at other clubs – were namechecked by the billionaire in an interview with BBC Sport.

Fernandes said: “I don’t think any player likes to hear criticism or things that are talked about to you, that you’re not good enough or you’re overpaid or whatever.

“But everyone has their own contract. The club agrees to the contracts and it’s about proving that you can be important for the club.”

Injured Neymar replaced by Endrick in Brazil squad

Brazil have called up teenage forward Endrick to replace Neymar for this month’s World Cup qualifiers after the Santos attacker picked up a muscle injury.

Neymar was due to make his Selecao return after a 17-month absence because of a knee injury which he sustained against Uruguay in October 2023.

But the 33-year-old has now had a further setback, ruling him out of the qualifiers against Colombia and Argentina.

“The return seemed so close, but unfortunately I won’t be able to wear the most important jersey in the world for the moment,” he wrote on Instagram.

“We had long conversations and everyone knows of my desire to return, but we agreed that it’s best not to take any risks and prepare as best as possible to completely eradicate the injury.”

Following a difficult spell at Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, Neymar moved back to boyhood club Santos in January and has scored three goals and provided three assists in seven appearances in the Brazilian top flight. Only Cafu (142) has more caps for Brazil than Neymar (128) – who is his country’s record scorer with 79 goals, two more than Pele.

Brazil head coach Dorival Jr has also called up Lyon goalkeeper Lucas Perri for Manchester City’s Ederson and Flamengo defender Alex Sandro to replace team-mate Danilo.

Endrick, 18, has made 28 appearances for Real Madrid across all competitions this season, scoring six goals.

He has made 13 senior appearances for Brazil and scored three goals.

I have to earn right to sing national anthem – Tuchel

England manager Thomas Tuchel says he has to “earn the right” to sing the national anthem.

Tuchel, 51, named his 26-man squad for this month’s World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Latvia on Friday and said he will not sing God Save the King before those matches.

“I feel that it is not just a given. You cannot just sing it. That’s why I decided that I will not sing it in my first matches,” the German said.

After his appointment in October Tuchel said he had “not decided” whether or not to sing the anthem.

The former Chelsea and Bayern Munich boss officially became England manager on 1 January but will make his debut in the Three Lions dugout against Albania on 21 March.

“I think, first of all, you have a very powerful, emotional and meaningful national anthem and I could not be more proud to be on the sidelines and be in charge of the English national team,” Tuchel said. “It means everything. It means a lot to me, I can assure you, but I can feel because it is that meaningful and it is that emotional and it is so powerful, the national anthem, that I have to earn my right to sing it.”

Lee Carsley was criticised during his interim spell in charge of England last year for not singing the anthem.

Tuchel joked in his news conference following the squad announcement that he does know the words to the anthem, but plans to earn the right to sing it with “results, building the group and doing my job properly”.

“Maybe I have to dive more into the culture and earn my right from you, from the players, from the supporters, so everyone feels like ‘he should sing it now, he’s one of our own, he’s the English manager, he should sing it’,” he said.
