Guardiola hits back at Capello’s ‘arrogant’ jibe

Pep Guardiola has hit back at Fabio Capello’s latest criticism of his management style – and the Manchester City boss insists he has “raised the bar” in the Premier League.

The pair have had a frosty relationship since the Italian managed Guardiola for a short time at Roma in 2002, and the 78-year-old felt the Spaniard spoke out of turn.

Capello reignited their feud in the middle of City’s woeful run of one win in 13 games earlier this season.

Speaking on Sky Italia, the former Juventus, AC Milan and England coach said Guardiola was “way too arrogant and presumptuous” because he wanted to prove City were winning matches through his tactics.

While they have stabilised their campaign, City are still struggling for consistency and are fifth in the Premier League and face an FA Cup quarter-final at Bournemouth on 30 March for their only chance of a major trophy this season, having won the Community Shield in August.

After their 1-0 defeat at third-placed Nottingham Forest last weekend, Capello gave an interview to Spanish newspaper El Mundo in which, while praising Guardiola’s tactics, he said the City manager was “arrogant” and had “caused enormous damage” to Italian football because coaches tried to imitate his tactics. Guardiola was clearly aware of the comments, given the manner in which he acknowledged them when a question was asked before Saturday’s league game against Brighton.

“I listen to everything that people say about me, so be careful,” he said.

“It’s not the first time Mr Fabio Capello has said that. I’m not good enough to ruin Italian football. A big hug to Fabio. A big hug.”

The response continued a long-established policy of Guardiola referring to individuals he has a problem with as “Mr”, which includes former player Joao Cancelo, ex-midfielder Yaya Toure’s agent Dimitri Seluk and Kevin Parker, general secretary of the Manchester City supporters’ club, who got embroiled in a spat over attendances.

The sarcasm extended to a second answer as he assessed the ability of middle-ranking Premier League teams to win the title in the future.

“I don’t want to pretend to be, and naming again one of the big managers, one of the exceptional managers in Fabio Capello, and look arrogant, but we helped raise the bar in the Premier League,” added Guardiola, who made five appearances in his one-year playing spell at Roma.

“Teams had to go to the markets and that helps people. People want to do good, people are well organised, have good structures, good decisions, good players everywhere.

“I’ve been here when I went to Bournemouth in the beginning, and now it’s different. And when I went in the beginning in Brighton, and now it’s different. And when I went in Fulham in the beginning, and now it’s different.”

Bournemouth, Brighton and Fulham have played in the Championship during Guardiola’s nine-year City tenure and are now challenging for Champions League qualification places this season.

“I’m an old guy, I’m the oldest manager here, nine years. So, I know the evolution of the Premier League has been massive,” he added.

Greenland tells Trump: ‘Enough is enough’

Greenland’s outgoing leader, Múte B Egede, has strongly condemned US President Donald Trump’s renewed comments about annexing the world’s largest island.

“Now the US president has once again floated the idea of annexing us. I cannot accept that under any circumstances,” Egede wrote on Facebook. Expressing his frustration, he announced plans to convene other political leaders as soon as possible to issue a stronger rejection of Trump’s remarks.

He stressed that such disrespect toward Greenlanders could no longer be tolerated, declaring, “Enough is enough.”

Jens-Frederik Nielsen, the potential successor to Egede and leader of the centre-right Demokraatit (Democrats) party, also criticized Trump’s statement and described it as inappropriate, emphasizing the need for Greenlanders to stand together in response. Reinforcing his party’s stance on Greenland’s sovereignty, Nielsen pointed to their election manifesto, which firmly states, “Greenland is not for sale. Not today. Not tomorrow. Not ever.”

Despite repeated pushback, Trump has continued to express his interest in taking control of Greenland, which remains a territory of the Kingdom of Denmark.
During a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House on Thursday, he reignited the issue by responding to a reporter’s question about annexation, saying, “I think it will happen.”

He highlighted the island’s strategic importance and its geographical distance from Denmark.

Egede has consistently reiterated that Greenlanders seek neither Danish nor American rule, but rather recognition of their identity and autonomy.

Rev. Kusi Boateng arrested by NIB

Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng, also known as Kwabena Adu Gyamfi, has been detained by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) as part of an ongoing investigation into allegations of possessing multiple identities.

The controversy surrounding Rev. Kusi Boateng emerged in 2023 when North Tongu MP, now Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, alleged in an exposé that the Secretary to the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral held multiple passports under different names.

“From unassailable and irreproachable documents in my possession, Rev. Victor Kusi-Boateng, AKA Kwabena Adu Gyamfi, uses multiple passports and multiple identification cards with different names and different dates of birth as his special modus operandi,” Ablakwa stated in a Facebook post.

Ablakwa further claimed that JNS Talent Centre Ltd, a company owned by Rev. Kusi Boateng, received GH¢2.6 million for the National Cathedral project under the pseudonym Kwabena Adu Gyamfi.

According to him, documents in his possession confirmed that Kwabena Adu Gyamfi and Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng were the same individual. Despite these allegations, Boateng continues to serve as an Executive Council Member/Director of the National Cathedral Board.

On July 13, 2024, the Human Rights Court dismissed an application filed by Rev. Kusi Boateng, which sought to prevent MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa from making public statements about his involvement in the National Cathedral affairs.

While the specific charges against him remain undisclosed, sources suggest that the investigation is focused on his alleged dual identity.

Francis-Xavier Kojo Sosu, the Member of Parliament for Madina, has expressed his support for President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to declare a two-day holiday for Eid ul-Fitr celebrations.

In honour of his promises made during his election campaign and to acknowledge the contributions of the Muslim community to national development, President Mahama at the sod-cutting ceremony for the new Hajj Village on Friday, February 28 said that he had instructed the legal counsel at the presidency, Madam Marietta Brew, to amend the Public Holidays Act accordingly.

Sosu, in an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Friday, stated that “The president’s proposal is a very welcomed proposal because it addresses part of what I sought to do with that bill in the former parliament.” He further praised the president’s leadership, adding, “We just thank the prudent and commend him for the bold decision to make him happen.”

Nsoatreman FC has officially withdrawn from the ongoing 2024/25 Ghana Premier League, citing serious concerns over the security and safety of their players.

Currently sitting 14th on the league table with 21 points, Nsoatreman was set to face Basake Holy Stars in their next fixture.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has yet to respond to the club’s withdrawal.

Ghana’s senior national team will host Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium on March 21 for their Matchday 5 fixture before traveling to Morocco to face Madagascar on March 24 in Matchday 6.

Speaking to the media upon his return from Cairo—where he secured a seat on the CAF Executive Committee—Okraku emphasized the importance of unity and unwavering support for the Black Stars.

Deputy Local Gov’t Minister leads fact-finding mission at Dome Market

The Deputy Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, alongside the Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya, Elikplim Akurugu, and a resource mobilization team, have embarked on a fact-finding mission at the Dome Market.

The aim was to assess the current condition of the market and explore the possibilities of reconstruction or the establishment of a new facility.

Following the inspection, the Deputy Minister addressed the traders, assuring them that the current state of the market would be presented to the Minister for further action.

“Given the poor condition of the market, we will make sure the necessary steps are taken to address the situation,” she stated, emphasizing the ministry’s commitment to improving the market for the benefit of both traders and the community. This visit is part of the Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs Ministry’s broader initiative to enhance market conditions across the country.

By improving the infrastructure of markets like Dome Market, the government hopes to reduce sanitation risks, such as the spread of cholera, and improve the overall livelihoods of traders and potential fire outbreak. The Queen Mother for Dome Market traders, Eveline Abena Sibea, also pledged the traders’ support for the Ministry’s efforts.

“We are committed to working together to develop and improve our market,” she said, expressing optimism that the partnership would bring positive change to the market and its surroundings.
