NBA: LeBron James scores record setting 50,000 points in Lakers win

LeBron James is well on his way to rewriting every previous definition of basketball longevity, and the 40-year-old star is now racking up numbers the NBA has never seen before.

James became the first player to score 50,000 combined points in the regular season and postseason on Tuesday night, surpassing the mark with a 3-pointer early in the first quarter of the Los Angeles Lakers’ 136-115 win over New Orleans.

James finished with 34 points against the Pelicans after toppling another milestone in his unprecedented career.

“I mean, that’s a lot of points,” James said afterward, rubbing his beard in wonder. “Obviously, the first thing that comes to mind is where I’m from.”

“Picking up the game when I was a little kid and having a love for the sport, and hoping that someday I’d be able to play at the highest level. I’ve been able to do that and really enjoy my career. So it’s definitely an honor. It’s pretty cool to see that.” James already is the top scorer in NBA history in both the regular season and the playoffs. Maintaining a spectacular level of play midway through his record-tying 22nd season, he is pulling away from the other greats of the game: Lakers great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who played 20 seasons, is a now-distant second with 44,149 combined points.

Mo Kudus leads English Premier League with most strikes against woodwork

Ghana midfielder Mohammed Kudus has endured a frustrating 2024-2025 season after excelling in his debut campaign in the English Premier League with eight goals and six assists in 33 EPL games.

After finishing the 2023-2024 campaign with the Best Goal Award at West Ham and ranking second in West Ham’s Most Valuable Player Award, Kudus has three goals and an assist in 22 EPL games.

The Black Stars player’s frustrating season is highlighted in the eyebrow raising statistic of having the most strikes against the woodwork in the league.

Kudus ranks highest among all EPL players with five shots against the woodwork; Chelsea playmaker Cole Palmer has also endured a frustrating campaign in the second half of the season and has five shots that have hit the woodwork.

Six players have hit the woodwork four times including fellow Black Stars player Antoine Semenyo of AFC Bournemouth. The likes of Erling Haaland and league leading goal scorer Mohammed Salah have also hit the woodwork four times.

Black Stars: Ibrahim Osman to miss UCL second leg tie against Inter Milan

Ghana forward Ibrahim Osman will miss the return leg of the UEFA Champions League tie between Dutch side Feyenoord and Italian side Inter Milan.

The 20 year old player will miss the second matchup between the clubs that is scheduled to take place in Milan on March 11 after picking up a yellow card in the first leg that ended in a 2-0 win for Inter.

Inter Milan strikers Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martinez scored in each half to give the Italia club a significant advantage heading into the upcoming round.

Black Stars player Osman was booked in the 76th minute for a late foul on Milan Dutch defender Denzel Dumfries. The booking is Osman’s third in seven Champions League outings in the 2024-2025 season after getting booked in games against Girona and RB Salzburg at the group stage. Osman played out the full duration of the game which marked recently appointed Feyenoord head coach Robin Van Persie’s debut in the competition. In 90 minutes, Osman completed 14 of 18 passes, created a big chance and registered three shots on target. Competing in his debut season with the Dutch giants, Osman has three goals and two assists in 25 games in all competitions. He is in contention to be named to the Black Stars for upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup games against Chad and Madagascar on March 21 and 24 respectively.

UCL Round of 16: Harvey Elliott scores late; Liverpool pip PSG in first leg

Liverpool completed one of the biggest smash and grabs in Champions League history to come away from their last-16 first leg against Paris St-Germain with a win.

PSG completely dominated the game, with 27 shots, and Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson had to make nine saves.

But the hosts could not find an opener – and the Reds scored with their second shot of the night in the 87th minute.

Harvey Elliott netted with his first touch, after replacing Mohamed Salah, when he was picked out by Darwin Nunez.

Luis Enrique’s side were shell shocked – and how they failed to score will go down as a mystery. Well, an Alisson-shaped mystery.

PSG forwards Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in particular were unplayable at times. Kvaratskhelia had a fine goal in the first half rightly disallowed by the video assistant referee (VAR) for offside. The VAR again sided with Liverpool, more controversially, when Ibrahima Konate avoided a red card despite shoving Bradley Barcola over just outside the box. Liverpool will host the second leg next Tuesday.

UCL Round of 16: 10-Man Barcelona beat Benfica in Lisbon

Raphinha was once again Barcelona’s hero as they claimed a narrow win over Benfica in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie, despite going down to 10 men.

The Brazilian capitalised on a defensive error to drive forward and slot in the bottom corner in the 61st minute, notching his 25th goal of the season and ninth in the Champions League campaign.

Raphinha also came to the rescue for five-time winners Barca in January when the two sides met in the league group phase, scoring a 96th-minute winner in a nine-goal thriller.

Meeting again at this knockout stage of the competition, Barcelona had to play with 10 men from the 22nd minute after teenager Pau Cubarsi brought down Benfica striker Vangelis Pavlidis on the edge of the penalty box but, as the last man, received a straight red card.

The Portuguese hosts thought they had a penalty in the 82nd minute after the otherwise faultless Wojciech Szczesny brought down Andrea Belotti, but the spot-kick was overturned for offside in the build-up. Barcelona held on to take a narrow lead to the Camp Nou for the second leg on Tuesday 11 March (17:45 GMT).

Court adjourns Gregory Afoko murder retrial to April 7

An Accra Criminal Court has adjourned the third retrial of Gregory Afoko’s murder case to April 7, 2025.

Afoko, who has been on remand for nearly a decade at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison, is currently out on GHS 500,000 bail, while his co-accused, Asabke Alangdi, remains on death row.

The adjournment was granted following a request from the prosecution, with the court agreeing to proceed on the new date, provided that the seven-member jury is duly constituted.

Afoko is facing trial for the 2015 murder of the former Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Adams Mahama. Mahama succumbed to fatal acid burns after being attacked at the entrance of his Bolgatanga residence. Before his death, he reportedly identified Afoko and Alangdi as his assailants.

In April 2024, a seven-member jury unanimously convicted Alangdi of conspiracy but acquitted Afoko of murder and conspiracy to commit murder, delivering a split verdict.

Presided over by Justice Marie-Louise Simmons, the court is set to begin the third retrial once all outstanding matters regarding jury selection are resolved before the next hearing date.

Background

On February 24, an Accra High Court granted Gregory Afoko bail in the sum of GHS 500,000 for his alleged involvement in a conspiracy to commit murder. Afoko, the younger brother of former NPP Chairman Paul Afoko, was accused of plotting with the convicted Asabke Alangdi to kill Adams Mahama, the former Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

As part of the bail conditions, Afoko is required to provide two sureties, one of whom must be justified.

His legal team had previously filed two unsuccessful bail applications before submitting a fresh request on February 17, 2025. This marked his third attempt to secure bail after spending nearly a decade in custody.

Arrested in 2015, Afoko was accused of orchestrating a fatal acid attack on Adams Mahama outside his residence in Bolgatanga. The trial, which began in 2019, concluded in 2023, but the jury returned a hung verdict on both counts of murder and conspiracy to commit murder against him.

As a result, the court ordered a retrial. Afoko was re-arrested and denied bail after the initial proceedings, but with the recent ruling, he has now been granted bail ahead of his third retrial.

Afigya Kwabre South assembly calls for District Coordinating Director’s removal

Assembly Members in the Afigya Kwabre South Municipality have demanded the immediate removal of the District Coordinating Director, Yvonne Naboo, accusing her of unilaterally suspending the operationalization of a quarry fund meant to generate revenue for development projects.

According to the assembly, the fund was suspended following an illegal takeover of the revenue collection point by thugs after the 2024 elections.

The members argue that the decision to halt the fund was made without their consultation, affecting the municipality’s revenue mobilization efforts. Speaking to Citi News on March 5, the Assembly Member for the Buoho Electoral Area, Evans Kusi Worae, expressed frustration over the move.

“Our district coordinating director unilaterally suspended the quarry fund without consulting the assembly members, whilst revenue mobilization is one of our main streams for district development.

“In that regard, we are demanding the removal of the district coordinating director since she took that decision alone. Once she’s ready to do a review and give us a detailed explanation informing her decision, we will insist on her removal.” he stated. Additionally, Worae called on the government to pay the outstanding ex-gratia owed to assembly members, emphasizing their dedication and service to the people.

“It is the rightful entitlement of the assembly members. We have sacrificed our time and effort to serve the people. If they refuse to pay the remaining outstanding then it is a clear disregard for the work we have done.

“Even though they’ve started releasing the funds after our press conference, we hope they finish the payments”, he added.

FOCAP criticizes Juliet Asante over post-tenure allegations

The leadership of the Foundation of Concerned Arts Professionals (FOCAP) has criticized Juliet Asante, the former Executive Secretary of the National Film Authority (NFA), over her recent claims regarding the challenges she faced during her tenure.

The critic follows the actress’s allegations of financial difficulties, lack of support, and even sexual harassment during her tenure in office.

Asante shared the immense challenges she faced after being appointed to regulate and promote Ghana’s film industry.

According to her, she began her journey with the daunting task of establishing the NFA with only a paper mandate and no resources.

However, FOCAP has dismissed her statements as unfortunate, questioning why she did not address these issues while in office if she considered herself a strong woman, likening herself to Yaa Asantewaa.

FOCAP suggested that Asante should have spoken up and taken action at the time rather than voicing her concerns now, which they perceive as an attempt to seek sympathy. The group also argued that it would have been better for her to let “sleeping dogs lie” since she chose not to disclose these challenges during her time in office.

Furthermore, FOCAP labelled Asante’s claims as half-truths, alleging that she often disrespected the board, disregarded its directives, and made decisions without consulting them.

Speaking to Citi News, FOCAP President Kojo Preko Dankwa urged Juliet Asante to be fair and acknowledge her shortcomings during her tenure rather than presenting a one-sided narrative.

“To me, to come out and pretend for public sympathy and make things look like you were trying to do something for the industry, but you were not given help from the board, the question is, did you consult the board in all your dealings? Percentage wise, it is a flaw. So, for me, it is neither here nor there for Juliet to come and speak the way she did, clamoring for sympathy which is not needed,” he stated.

Gender Ministry terminates contracts of school feeding coordinators

The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection has terminated the contracts of all Regional and Zonal Coordinators under the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP) with immediate effect.

No official reason was provided for the sudden termination.

In a statement issued on March 4, 2025, Gender Minister Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey announced the decision, expressing gratitude to the affected coordinators for their service.

Part of the statement read, “Please be informed that the contracts of all Regional and Zonal Coordinators of the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP) are hereby terminated with immediate effect.”

The affected staff have been instructed to report to the GSFP Secretariat to collect their termination letters and complete their handover processes.

The GSFP, a government initiative designed to provide free meals to schoolchildren to boost enrollment, attendance, and nutrition, has been a key social intervention programme in Ghana.

However, it has faced recurring challenges, including funding delays, allegations of corruption, and unpaid arrears to caterers.

Unknown gunmen allegedly invade Amewu’s house in Hohoe

Unknown gunmen reportedly stormed the residence of former Hohoe Member of Parliament, John Peter Amewu, on Wednesday, March 5.

According to Amewu, one of the assailants, who identified himself as a bailiff, claimed they were acting on “orders from above.” The intruders allegedly insisted that Amewu was not properly elected as an MP in the 2020 elections.

At the time of the incident, Amewu was not home. Authorities have yet to provide further details.

The gunmen reportedly fired warning shots, sparking a confrontation with some of Amewu’s supporters.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Citi FM with Selorm Adonoo, Amewu said, “They said they were there to serve me a notice because I was not duly elected in 2020, hence their decision to serve me. And that the C.I was not constitutional.”

Expressing concern over the incident, he questioned Ghana’s democratic practice and confirmed that his supporters in Hohoe had reported the matter to the police.

Despite the attack, Amewu has declined police protection.
