Special Education Division Engages Stakeholders to Draft Policy Guidelines on Vocational Transition for Learners with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDDs)

The Deputy Director-General for Management Services (DD-G/MS) of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Mr Stephen Kwaku Owusu, opened a one-day stakeholder engagement session on behalf of the Director-General to develop a draft policy guidelines on vocational transition for learners with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDDs).

In his opening remarks, the DD-G(MS) applauded the Director of Special Education Division (SpED), Ms. Helena Mensah and her team for putting together the concept note for draft policy guidelines on vocational transition for learners with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDDs). He emphasised that the GES found it necessary to empower learners with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities with employable skills to enable them to earn a living wage after completing school.

The Director of the Special Education Division of GES, Ms. Helena Mensah, welcomed the participants and thanked the Ananse Foundation, Germany, and Africa Action Ghana for collaborating with GES to develop vocational transition policy guidelines for learners with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

The Country Director of Africa Action Ghana, Mrs Dinah Kwadade, who co-chaired the event with the Director for SpED, expressed her organisation’s readiness to continue to partner with GES to develop and implement the policy guidelines for vocational transition for learners with IDDs.

The stakeholders included selected Special educators from Special Schools and Units for IDDs, Regional, Metro/Municipal, and District SpED Coordinators, parents, and other professionals who examined how to support the development of a locally friendly model of transition programme for learners in selected Special Schools and Units for IDDs
